The story
Bandits killed Calder's son and burned his village. He brought coin and resolve to Oswin's forge and asked for the smith's best. When the blade lay finished, Oswin asked what it would leave him with, and Calder found he did not know. He went home without it, planted crops in the scorched earth, and found a peace he had not thought possible.
