From its towering ramparts, one could see the vast plains of Albion stretching into the horizon—a land now crawling with the Dragon Kin’s advancing forces. Within its walls, Eadric of Blackmere stood at the war table, surrounded by maps, battered weapons, and the weary faces of his comrades.
The enemy would be upon them by dawn.
The Last Council
Eadric traced a finger along the map, his jaw clenched. “The Dragon Kin outnumber us five to one. Their siege engines will breach the walls within hours unless we hold the chokepoints.”
Lady Morwenna of Brynmor leaned over the table, her emerald cloak brushing the stone floor. “And if the walls fall?”
“Then we fight in the streets,” Eadric said grimly. “Ravenspire has never fallen to an outside force. We will not be the first to break.”
Ysador, The Flamecaller, paced near the fire, her staff glowing faintly. “My flames can delay their advance, but not forever. We need more than brute force. We need strategy.”
Rykard, The Shadowed, emerged from the corner, his voice low. “I can disrupt their supply lines and sabotage their siege engines. But I’ll need time.”
Eadric nodded. “You’ll have it. Morwenna, gather the archers and station them on the south wall. Ysador, prepare the fire traps in the lower streets. I’ll rally the infantry at the gates. We hold Ravenspire, no matter the cost.”
The room fell silent as the weight of their task settled over them. Each of them knew the odds, but none spoke of surrender.
The First Wave
The dawn came blood-red, the Dragon Kin’s warhorns echoing through the valley. From the walls of Ravenspire, Eadric watched as their forces marched forward—an endless tide of twisted creatures and armored soldiers, their banners emblazoned with the sigil of Malakar, The Firstborn of Shadow.
“Archers, ready!” Morwenna’s voice rang out, clear and commanding. The defenders stood poised, their bows drawn, their breaths steady.
“Loose!” she cried.
A hail of arrows descended upon the advancing horde, cutting through the first ranks. But the Dragon Kin pressed on, their siege engines rumbling forward. Massive boulders crashed against Ravenspire’s walls, sending shards of stone flying.
Eadric stood at the gates, his sword gleaming in the morning light. “Hold the line!” he roared, his voice carrying over the chaos. The infantry braced as the first wave of enemies crashed into them, steel meeting steel in a cacophony of battle.
The Flames of Defiance
In the lower streets, Ysador’s fire traps roared to life, engulfing the enemy in walls of flame. She moved with purpose, her staff weaving patterns of destruction and protection. The streets became a battlefield of smoke and ash, the Dragon Kin struggling to advance through the inferno.
But their numbers were relentless, and Ysador’s strength began to wane. She fell back to regroup with the defenders, her flames flickering but unbroken.
The Shadows Strike
Far beyond the walls, Rykard moved like a wraith among the enemy lines. His cloak blended with the darkness, his dagger striking swift and silent. He sabotaged the wheels of the siege engines, doused their oil reserves, and cut down their officers before vanishing into the mist.
His efforts slowed the enemy’s advance, buying precious time for Ravenspire’s defenders. But as he returned to the fortress, he was met with grim news.
The Breach
A thunderous crash shook the ground as the south wall collapsed, the Dragon Kin pouring through the breach. Eadric rallied his forces, his blade carving a path through the chaos. “To the breach!” he shouted, leading the charge.
The battle raged in the streets of Ravenspire, every alley and courtyard becoming a battleground. The defenders fought with a ferocity born of desperation, but the enemy’s numbers seemed endless.
Morwenna stood atop a crumbled parapet, her arrows striking true even as her quiver emptied. “We must hold!” she cried, her voice cutting through the din.
The Turning Tide
As the battle reached its peak, a figure emerged from the shadows of the keep—Lorien, Keeper of the Starshard. In her hands, the Starshard pulsed with celestial light, its energy radiating outward like a second dawn.
“The Starshard’s power can drive them back,” she said, her voice calm yet urgent. “But its use comes at a cost.”
Eadric met her gaze, understanding the gravity of her words. “Do it. Albion cannot afford to lose Ravenspire.”
Lorien raised the Starshard high, its light blinding as it unleashed a surge of energy. The Dragon Kin recoiled, their dark forms withering under the celestial power. The defenders seized the moment, pushing the enemy back through the breach.
The Aftermath
When the battle ended, Ravenspire stood, though its walls were battered and its defenders bloodied. The Dragon Kin had retreated, but the cost of victory was steep. Many had fallen, and Lorien collapsed, her strength spent from wielding the Starshard’s power.
Eadric knelt beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder. “You saved us.”
Lorien’s eyes fluttered open, a faint smile on her lips. “The fight is not over, Eadric. But for now… Albion endures.”
As the sun set over Ravenspire, its defenders gathered their dead and tended to their wounded. They had held the line, but they knew the war was far from over. The siege was but one battle in the long fight for Albion’s survival.
